Razored Raw is a fiercely independent D.I.Y. record label based in Wellington, New Zealand. Since its founding in 2017 by Matt Schwed, the label has become a vital force in the underground punk and extreme music scene, specialising in raw punk, hardcore, thrash metal, and post-punk. By 2025, Razored Raw had released over 60 titles, showcasing both local New Zealand talent and international acts.
The label is known for its hands-on, grassroots approach, frequently collaborating on split releases with fellow DIY imprints such as Limbless Music, Hairy Palm, and Always Never Fun Records. It has also partnered with bands and labels from Japan, Italy, the USA, Canada, and Australia, while distributing extreme noise from around the globe.
A distinctive feature of Razored Raw is founder Matt Schwed’s deep personal involvement in the scene. In addition to running the label, Schwed has performed in numerous Razored Raw bands, including Pvnisher, Corpse Rat, Piggery, Datguy, Putrid Future, Chainsore, Gutter Killer, Manic Aggression, Skitkrimes, No Sector, Barren Hellscape, Nullpolitik, Maced, and Toilet.
The label has also played a key role in documenting and energising New Zealand’s punk underground. It released two notable compilations – NO NZ (2017) and Rungus Among Us (2019) – that captured the raw spirit of local acts.
Beyond releases, Razored Raw has been an active force in the live scene, organising countless shows in Wellington and helping bring international underground acts to New Zealand on tour. Rooted in D.I.Y. ethics and a love for loud, uncompromising music, Razored Raw continues to champion the most primitive, noisy, and authentic sounds coming out of New Zealand and beyond.
