Tried for Treason was a hardcore punk band formed in Wellington, New Zealand, in 2000. Known for their intense dual-vocalist setup featuring Tim McDougall and Tom Rowell, the band was rounded out by Matt and Aaron Pinkham on guitars, Ed Challies on bass, and Scotty on drums. Tim, Ed, and Aaron, originally from Nelson, brought prior experience from bands like Mindset and Natural Hazard, while Tom had played in Hutt Valley’s Diecast from 1996 to 1998. Initially formed as Iron Monkey with Scotty and Matt, the group added Tom as a second vocalist and rebranded as Tried for Treason.

Over their four-year run, Tried for Treason became a staple in Wellington’s hardcore scene, performing at venues like Thistle Hall, Underground Arts, and Valve, as well as numerous house parties. They shared stages with local acts such as The Deadline, School of Meat, Brubeck, and Bonus Donor, and supported international bands like Throwdown and Terror. On February 12, 2004, the band recorded 10 tracks at The Stomach in Palmerston North with engineer Hayden Sinclair, releasing the self-titled album on CD following their final show on February 27, 2004, at 44 Webb Street, Wellington.
