Lower Hutt Skate Posse! “I don’t wanna die in this town!”
Diecast was a hardcore band formed in 1996 by students of Hutt Valley High School: Tom Rowell (vocals), Ryan O’Leary (bass), Greg Bassett (guitar/vocals), and Julien Dyne (drums). A key player in Wellington’s vibrant punk and hardcore scene in the late 1990s, Diecast performed at packed all-ages shows in the Hutt Valley, Wellington’s Thistle Hall, and alongside bands like Motorsheep, Loosehead, Sommerset, Shinkasta, Balance and Fatal Error.
In 1996, they released Lead Grey World, a four-song demo EP. In February 1997, they appeared with Loosehead on When The Mute Get Lucid Vol.6, a split 7-inch lathe cut put out by the Wellington Singles Club. That March, they recorded “Fractured Protocol” and “Vocal Spear” at OMW Studios, which featured on the compilation CD All We Have Is Difference featuring bands like Loosehead, Balance and Sommerset. Diecast played Punkfest in 1996 and 1997, opened for UK ska-punks Citizen Fish, supported the return/farewell tour of SMUT, and opened for Californian band Your Mother in January 1998.
The band broke up shortly after a gig at Epuni Hall on February 20, 1998. Post-split, Tom Rowell joined Tried For Treason, Ryan O’Leary founded Backyard Burial and later played in School Of Meat, Pedal Faster, and Monsterworks, while Greg Bassett played in Backyard Burial for a short time in 2002 and currently plays bass in Wellington metal band Fvkvshima.
