“Fear tomorrow you fuckers”
Workshy was a short-lived but energetic fastcore punk band from Wellington, New Zealand, formed in late 2005 or early 2006 at the infamous Turret House in Newtown – a well-known hub for DIY punk activity.
The band came together when vocalist Sam (also active in the crust band Scab and the fastcore outfit Shortlived) learned that a French musician named Alex, who played solid d-beat, had moved nearby. With Dan Brady recruited on bass, Workshy initially planned just one show and a demo tape, expecting Alex’s stay in New Zealand to last only about a month before he returned to France.
Fueled by a strong anti-establishment attitude – including a notable disdain for “working for the man” and wearing shoes – the band embraced a raw, thrashy fastcore sound inspired by bands like Hellnation, Code 13, and Drop Dead, but with a more playful and fun edge.
They ended up playing more shows than anticipated, including their debut gig in February 2006 alongside Drug Problem and Dial, as well as appearances at events like Sharkfest in Wellington. The band split in August 2006 after a handful of performances.
Workshy’s recorded output included an 8-track self-titled demo cassette released early in 2006. Those same tracks later appeared on a split cassette with Australian band Crux, and on the international “Four Ways Split” (released in France, featuring Shortlived, Tentacles of Destruction, and Nelson Monfort Orchestra). Five songs were also reissued on a split 7″ with Finnish metal/punk act Death With A Dagger.
