Malparido was a ferocious fast-punk hardcore band from Wellington, New Zealand, formed in 2009. The lineup featured Carlos Patino on vocals, Tony Pearson on drums, Chris on guitar, and James Quick on bass. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Carlos delivered a raw mix of English and Spanish lyrics, with their name being Spanish for “born bad.”
Emerging from jam sessions in 2008, Malparido hit the scene with their first major gigs in January, 2009, with shows at Whammy in Auckland alongside Lebenden Toten from the USA and a show at Lorne Street with Entrails,Adam Smith Assassination, and Shortlived. Their sound drew heavily from skate punk pioneers like JFA, Gang Green and Scholastic Deth but cranked to a frenetic “Colombian marching powder” pace, with songs often clocking in under 30 seconds. Their music, laced with titles like “High Speed Curb Ollie,” “Skate Hasta la Muerto,” and “Frontside Grind,” mirrored the reckless, live-fast-die-young attitude of street skating culture.
In 2009, Malparido released a split 7” EP with U.S. band Party By The Slice via Carlos’s DIY label, El Paso Records, packing nine blistering tracks on their side. That June, they opened for UK punk icons The Varukers at Hole In The Wall. The band shared bills with local acts like Rogernomix, Cult of the Cobra, and Drug Problem (which also included Tony and James) during their brief but intense run. Their final show was at Punkfest 2009 in late October.
In 2012, Tony’s Drug Violence label released Malparido’s sole album, Septic Skate Gash, compiling 22 tracks including a cover of Poison Idea’s “In My Headache”.
Carlos formed Shock Futuro (2010-2012) after Malparido split before moving to Melbourne and forming the Sistema en Decadencia. Tony and James both ended up playing in sludge band Meth Drinker in 2010 and have played in many other bands since including Influence, Exterminator! and Unruly.
