Shock Futuro was a hardcore punk band from Wellington, New Zealand, active from 2010 to 2012. Formed by vocalist Carlos Patino after the dissolution of his previous band Malparido, the lineup featured Liz Gibson on bass, Bonnie Tonkin on guitar, and Sarsha Leigh-Douglas on drums. Drawing inspiration from 80s hardcore punk and bands like the Ramones, Scholastic Death, Los Crudos, ANS, Career Suicide, Cheap Sex, Scream, Culture Kids, JFA and Rudimentary Peni they delivered raw, fast-paced music with Spanish-language vocals, reflecting Carlos’ Colombian roots.

“There’s something I really like about Spanish punk and to put it all together was what I always wanted to do. Songs go from not believing in voting (personal choice not reflected on all the members I think…), TV and technology and how kids nowadays miss a lot of what we grew up with, and some other topics that I guess you could say relate to anarchism and free thinking.” (Carlos)

The band debuted on October 14, 2010, at Bar Bodega, raising funds for Black Sheep animal sanctuary, followed by a chaotic show at the Burgundy Room on October 22 for Punkfest 2010’s preview. Between 2011 and 2012, they shared stages with bands like Meth Drinker, Numbskull, Fantails, and Electric Mayhem, performing at out of town events like Hamtown Smakdown (“weird vibe”) and Christchurch’s Waitangi Wipeout in 2012.

In April 2012, Shock Futuro released their 7” EP Ruido Destructivo at a final show with Numbskull and Influence at San Fran Bath House. The band disbanded soon after as Carlos moved to Australia, where he formed Sistema En Decadencia. Liz later joined Awkward Death, Ayn Randy (with Bonnie), and Fog, while Sarsha and Bonnie played in the doom punk band DAHTM. Sarsha also performed with Wellington Fantails, Freak Magnet, and Rogernomix during Shock Futuro’s run.
