Noise Speed Aggression!
Skitkrimes was a raw punk band from Te Whanganui-a-Tara/ Wellington, active from 2022 to 2023, with a final release in 2024. Their sound channeled the aggressive, d-beat-driven käng punk of 1980s Swedish bands, filtered through the deviant, chaotic influence of Tokyo’s Skitklass – delivering short, violent bursts of noisy, blown-out hardcore punk.
The band began as a two-piece recording project featuring Simon Hartman (vocals/lyrics) and Matt Schwed (music, recording, and all instruments). Both had previously played together in the short-lived band Datguy. Matt also runs the local DIY punk label Razored Raw, which handled much of Skitkrimes’ releases.
In October 2022, the duo released their debut EP, Noise Speed Aggression, a five-track cassette raging against power, technology, and societal decay.
By mid-2023, the lineup expanded to a live four-piece with the addition of Quintin on bass and Harry (bass in Dole Bludger) on drums. This configuration contributed the track “Wretched” to the animal rights compilation End Greyhound Racing New Zealand on Simon Hartman’s label Limbless Music. The new lineup made their live debut in August 2023 at the Berhampore Warehouse in Wellington.
In November 2023, they performed at Neil Roberts Day in Whanganui and released the six-track tape Skitzedout – a co-release between Razored Raw and Limbless Music. The EP captured max-violence, one-minute blasts in the vein of Skitklass, with a raw four-track production aesthetic. However, tensions led to Quintin and Harry departing soon after, marking the end of live performances.
Returning to the core duo, Matt and Simon recorded and released a final five-song EP, Sudden Death, in June 2024. This marked the band’s conclusion.
Following Skitkrimes, Matt and Simon formed the four-piece grindcore band Maced in late 2024.
