The Sikfux

The Sikfux

The Sikfux were an anarchic street-punk band that emerged from Auckland’s DIY underground scene in late 2002. Formed as a four-piece outfit of self-described “all-male louts,” the band quickly developed a raw, fast punk sound that was proudly unpolished and described in PunkAs.com as “hollow and not well thought out.”

Politicized by the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq their lyrics blended fierce opposition to capitalism, imperialist wars, animal rights and mass media with tongue-in-cheek anthems about getting wasted on P and booze. After making enemies in Auckland, The Sikfux adopted Wellington as a spiritual second home. They became closely tied to the city’s activist scene, particularly the 128 Abel Smith Street community centre and bands such as If I Had A Gun, Carnys, Dead Vicious and Hung Jury.

The band played numerous shows and festivals across the country, including Pirate Fest, Punkfest 2003, Unityfest 2003, and various benefit gigs. In 2003 they released their debut EP No Lies Just D.I.Y. The following year they contributed the track “War For Bread” to the Stop The Bypass compilation CD, which protested the proposed Te Aro Bypass development in Wellington.

Guitarist Sam Thurston also played in the Wellington punk band Sparkle Motion during this period, with both groups sharing bills (including a memorable Newtown house party in late June 2004).The Sikfux officially split in late 2004, but in spring 2005 they posthumously released a second EP, Inhuman Terms. The record compiled recordings made between 2003-2004 at various Auckland locations and was dedicated to the memory of local Wellington punk Fatbob.
