Septic Noise Grinder

Septic Noise Grinder

Septic Noise Grinder were a short-lived but intense grindcore/punk band from Wellington, New Zealand, active between 1992 and 1994. They formed an integral part of the city’s early-90s underground punk scene, known for their raw aggression, politically charged lyrics, and strong ties to the local DIY community.

Septic Noise Grinder frequently played alongside bands such as SMUT, Schitzofrantics, Devoid, Conventional Toasters, Shrapnel, and Loosehead. They were closely associated with the Screaming Asylum punk house in Mount Victoria, a central hub for the scene at the time. Vocalist Chris Nelson wrote lyrics that tackled animal rights, police brutality, and the social impacts of the National government’s austerity measures of the early 1990s. The band’s sound blended grindcore speed and heaviness with punk’s raw energy and directness. They occasionally featured Kieren Hills (from SMUT) as a second vocalist.

In 1993, Septic Noise Grinder contributed three tracks, “For Pleasure For Pain,” “Fuck The TPU,” and “Our Decent Society”, to the Poison Profits compilation. The release was a fundraiser for the New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society (NZAVS), highlighting the band’s strong commitment to animal rights. The compilation also included Conventional Toasters, an experimental grindcore band that featured SNG bassist Chris Swain.

The band played their final show on 23 July 1994 at Thistle Hall, a benefit gig for the NZAVS. After the split, guitarist Greg Gregoroff continued in the underground scene as vocalist for the short-lived Rotting Affliction and the notoriously obscure music collective Circle of Rape.
