Pvnisher was a Wellington, New Zealand-based punk duo active from 2018 to 2020, known for their abrasive fusion of crust punk, black metal, and noise. Comprising Eoin O’Rourke on guitar/vocals and Matt on drums/vocals, the band delivered a raw, unrelenting sound characterized by feedback-drenched riffs, crashing percussion, and vocals that channeled themes of death, mutilation, and suffering. Influenced by bands like Deviated Instinct, Pvnisher’s music was a visceral outlet for bitter frustrations and real-world horrors.
Formed in 2018, Pvnisher emerged from the Wellington punk scene, with Eoin previously playing in the crust sludge duo Pantihero and Matt active in bands like Piggery and Corpse Rat. They began jamming and released their debut demo tape, Pvnishment Demonstration, in April 2018, featuring three original tracks and a cover of Deviated Instinct’s “Disciples Of The Storm.” All their music was released through Matt’s label, Razored Raw, including three demo EPs, the 7” single, A Private Hell (2019), and the Aleswiller EP (2019). In 2020, they released a split 7” with Bowel Rupture, showcasing their signature “blunt-force audio trauma” with blown-out crust and searing black metal. Pvnisher also appeared on two 2019 compilations, Hairy Palm Vol.3 and Rungus Among Us.
Described as “rank, dank, and relentlessly cantankerous,” Pvnisher’s music was a sonic assault, blending impenetrable riffs and mind-chiseling cacophony. The duo split in 2020, with Matt continuing in bands like Putrid Future, Gutter Killer, Skitkrimes, and No Sector, leaving behind a legacy as purveyors of gruesome, uncompromising noise.
