Born out of the fertile Hutt Valley punk scene of the late 90’s, Discenter was a post-hardcore/ nu-metal band founded by guitarist Greg Bassett, previously of influential Lower Hutt hardcore band Diecast. He was joined by Jonny Fairclough on guitar and backing vocals, Chris Vartan on bass, Alex Young on drums, and Tom Rainey-Smith on vocals.
The band only played a handful of gigs during 2000 but managed to record at O.M.W studio, producing 6 tracks that later featured on The Valley 8 split CD with fellow Hutt band Barzell, which also featured Alex Young on drums. Discenter’s last show on record took place at Punkfest 2000, that October. By the end of that year both Discenter and Barzell had disbanded with five members from both bands going on to form The Valley Five.
