Skapa

Skapa

Skapa were a Wellington-based ska band formed in December 1988, emerging as a key force in New Zealand’s late-1980s revival of traditional two tone ska. The idea for a band devoted solely to ska and reggae was hatched over many beers at the Londoner’s Club, an old-school English-style pub on Wellington’s waterfront.  “Dissatisfied with the anaemic computer-generated noise that passes for dance music today” Chas, Hugh, Matt and Mike set about formulating a ska band to inject some of the upbeat and dance crazy sound of Jamaica into the Wellington scene.

Building on the foundations laid by first-generation local ska acts such as The Preservatives, The Instigators and The Newmatics, Skapa channelled the upbeat Jamaican rhythms and horn-driven sound popularised by UK bands like Madness during their New Zealand tours a decade earlier. Over the band’s eight-year lifespan, the three core members were Craig Chisholm (vocals), Hugh Costello (guitar/keyboards) and Chas Mannell (drums). Mannell had previously played in early Wellington punk band Ambitious Vegetables and was later an original member of chart-topping new wave act The Mockers.

Skapa typically performed as a nine-piece band, with a rotating cast of horn players and supporting musicians. They made their live debut in January 1989 playing to a raucous crowd at the Londoner’s. A month later they were supporting The Holidaymakers at Victoria University, just as that band was riding a number-one hit. Early on, Skapa built a loyal following with a repertoire focused on two tone classics and early Jamaican ska, while steadily introducing original material .

Their debut EP, Skaparty, was launched with a show at Wellington’s BNU Clubrooms in August 1990. In 1992 they released their first album, Easy Street, on cassette, combining studio recordings from Marmalade Studios with live tracks captured at The New Carpark. A short North Island tour followed to promote the release.

After briefly breaking up in late 1993 and reforming in 1994 with a refreshed lineup, Skapa continued to play shows and were central to the local scene, including performing at the first New Zealand Ska Party in Auckland, organised by Skapa’s drummer Chas. Plans for an overseas tour ultimately fell through, and the band drifted into hiatus before returning for a short run of gigs in 1996.

Skapa played their last ever show at Skaparty 4 at Wellington’s Intensified venue (now San Fran Bath House) on 31 May 1997. By then, they had firmly established themselves as one of the defining bands of New Zealand’s second-wave ska movement, helping pass the baton to new groups like The Offbeats who would carry the sound forward into the following decades.
