Formed in Wellington in 1994, The Offbeats emerged from the city’s bubbling ska scene, built around members of earlier outfit Looney Tunes. Anchored by longtime core members David Gray (vocals) and Chris “Dusty” McLoughlin (keys), the band has grown and shifted through numerous line-up changes over three decades, at times expanding to an eight-piece complete with full horn section.

The Offbeats first hit the stage at a house party in 1994, quickly becoming a fixture in the capital’s live circuit. By 1995 they were supporting international acts including UK tribute outfit Complete Madness and Australian ska stalwarts The Porkers, the beginning of a long run of support slots with touring overseas artists. Over the years they’ve shared stages with Citizen Fish, Neville Staple’s Specials, The Skatalites, Smoke or Fire, UK Subs, The Vibrators, and Horace Pinker.

The band’s high-energy, punk-leaning brand of ska made them a natural fit in both ska and punk circles. They frequently performed alongside New Zealand punk bands such as Foamy Ed, Blake, Brubeck, Sommerset, Loosehead, The Nana Squad, Mailbox Skipole, Not Quite Right, and Outsiders, while also forming a strong connection with Dunedin ska-punk groups Ritalin, Blistering Tongues, and Skaface Claw.

Their discography began with the EP Just Begun… released in August 1996, followed by their fully self-funded and self-produced debut album The Offbeats in 2000. Their profile extended internationally through appearances on compilations such as Ska-otea-roa, A Day in the Life, and several overseas ska collections including Planet Ska, Only for Ska Addicts, Ska Spelled Backwards, and Skank Down Under, the latter selling more than 3000 copies.

Live performance has always been The Offbeats’ heartbeat. Alongside regular shows around Wellington and the North Island, they took part in key events such as the 1995 and 1996 NZ Ska Festivals, Ska Wars 1998 at Auckland’s Powerstation, and Sweetwaters ’99. They also crossed the Tasman for tours of Australia in 2000 and again in the 2002–03 summer.

The Offbeats may have slowed down the skank over the years but have still managed a return to the stage every now celebrating 30 years in 2024 and the Skanniversary gig at San Fan Bath House in January 2025.
