Not Quite Right were a punk band from Paraparaumu, north of Wellington, New Zealand, active throughout the 2000s. Formed in 2001 by Dave McDonald (drums), Daniel Burmester (guitar, lead vocals), and James Bryant (bass, vocals), the trio quickly made their mark on the local scene, finishing runner-up in the Wellington regional Battle of the Bands final.
Their self-titled debut album arrived in June 2003, featuring 15 tracks recorded while still a three-piece. The record captured the band’s mix of upbeat, melodic punk and angsty, reflective lyrics – songs about girls, mates, and growing up. Tracks like “Not Quite Done Yet” and “Me and Her” also appeared on punk compilations Remedial Class and Punkemon 2, helping the band gain exposure beyond their hometown.
In 2004, guitarist/vocalist “Pudd” joined the lineup, thickening the band’s sound as they became a regular fixture in the Wellington punk circuit. That year saw Not Quite Right sharing stages with local acts such as Sidecar Fury and Rearview Murder, and opening for international punk heavyweights Lagwagon and Auckland’s The Rabble.
By 2005, Not Quite Right were hitting their stride – supporting Sommerset, Strung Out, and Strike Anywhere, and touring the country. They also began recording their follow-up album in Burmester’s bedroom studio, released the next year as Point Of No Return on their DIY imprint Harbour City Records. The album showcased a more mature, muscular sound influenced by Rise Against, Brubeck, and Sommerset, with thoughtful, introspective lyrics set against tight, powerful songwriting.
In 2006, the band supported Against Me! and The Bouncing Souls, and performed at Punkfest in Wellington, before Pudd departed and Not Quite Right returned to their original trio format. Early the next year, they released the EP Our History, Our Future?, praised for its fiery delivery and anthemic choruses on tracks like “Us Against Them” and “Holiday Spirit.” A New Zealand tour with Ritalin followed, including support slots for Strike Anywhere once again.
By 2008, McDonald and Burmester had also formed a new project, The Outsiders, with two ex-members of Ritalin, while continuing to record with Not Quite Right. Their final album, The Ties and Bonds, was completed that year and released on July 10, 2009, with a farewell gig at Happy in Wellington alongside The Outsiders and The Nana Squad.
