Dirk Drent

Wellington Punk Urologists taking the piss (IYKYK)

Dirk Drent formed in 2000 and was part of a resurgent Wellington punk scene at the turn of the millennium made up of teenage bands that included Sheriff Lobo, The Minimals, The Perpetrators, Hung Jury and Bonus Donor. They played their first gig at Indigo on 3 November 2000, with Channel 13 and Phuket and self-released a demo CD called “Good Morning Richard”. A second EP of demos was released in 2001 with the band playing a bunch of shows including an October excursion to Palmerston North for the “Mr Spunky Punk Rock Man 2001!” show, which featured a lineup that represented the ‘yoof’ punk scene explosion at the time.

2002 was a busy year for Dirk Drent, playing gigs in Wellington and around the North Island with Auckland bands such as Sommerset, Foamy Ed and Losing Face. They released a split EP with Losing Face in 2003, but disbanded soon after the release gig, held at Valve on July 18. Their track “Tailbone Terror” was included on the Underground Resistance compilation of NZ punk and ska, released that year.
