Stress Ghetto are a Wellington-based three-piece power-violence band known for their short, savage bursts of chaotic hardcore. Formed in 2016 by Mitch, Bosun and Pete Harrow, the band draw heavily from classic power-violence touchstones such as Spazz, Infest and Crossed Out.

The band played their first show at Snails in Palmerston North in September 2016, followed shortly by their Wellington debut at the Ski Lodge in Kilbirnie. All three members were already active in punk and hardcore circles: Mitch had played in Ripfacer, Downer Buzz and Sports Violence; Pete was also involved in hardcore outfit Starving Millions and ska-punk band Dimestore Skanks; and Bosun had previously drummed in short-lived power-violence duo Police Lineup. Within months of forming, Stress Ghetto were sharing stages with touring Australian band Scrotal Vice and playing an afternoon Take Shelter gig at the WWII bunkers in Strathmore.

Stress Ghetto released their self-titled demo EP in 2017, a seven-track blast of rungus noise issued on mono cassette by local label Razored Raw. The release was described by Six Noises as “bleeding-raw frenzied hardcore smashing headfirst into powerviolence.” Later that year they followed it with their second EP, Material Hardship, a seven-inch released by Always Never Fun Records and Limbless Music, launched at a Karori Skate Park show alongside d-beat punks Rogernomix.

In 2018 the band released a split 7” with Auckland’s Sick Old Man and embarked on the North Island Domination tour with them plus Wellington fastcore punks Corpse Rat and Nelson d-beat band Feral Blood. That year also saw Stress Ghetto play Hamtown Smakdown, Tiger Spit Garage, and shows with Australian bands Reaper and Contaminated, contribute the track “Social Inequality” to a tribute compilation for US power-violence band Lack of Interest, and release two split tapes with Japanese bands Leech and Get It Today via Razored Raw.

2019 continued the run of releases and shows, beginning with a split with Wellington band Total Ruin on a novelty 5” lathe cut from Auckland label Hairy Palm. Stress Ghetto returned to Full Noise festival, appeared on Hairy Palm Compilation Vol. 3, and in October toured the west coast of the United States with World Peace (Oakland) and Heckdorlan (San Jose). The 16-show tour ran from Orange County to Vancouver and included a three-way split released to coincide with the run.

After appearances at Elimination Fest in Aro Valley and another Take Shelter show at the Strathmore bunkers in early 2020, the band’s momentum was disrupted by COVID-19 lockdowns. They resurfaced mid-year to play the “Punx 4 Black Lives Matter” show in Wellington and later released a split lathe-cut 7” with Hamilton grindcore band Dogcock in time for Punkfest 2020 in Ōtautahi/ Christchurch. Activity slowed over the following years due to lockdowns and outside commitments.

In 2024 Stress Ghetto returned to the United States for a two-week tour from New York to Los Angeles with Scotland’s Endless Swarm, with James Quick (Meth Drinker, Total Ruin, Exterminator!) filling in on guitar. Back home, they played Neil Roberts Day before entering a rebuilding phase in 2025 following Pete Harrow’s departure.
