G.M.C

G.M.C

G.M.C was a raw, stripped-down punk rock band hailing from Palmerston North, New Zealand, formed in June 2000. The band featured Graeme Slimin on guitar and vocals (who had played in the Wellington Oi! punk band The Sub-Dominants from 1987-1988), Matt Sanko on drums (previously of the notorious Palmerston North act Foisemaster) and Cale Hetariki on bass and vocals.

Drawing heavy inspiration from classic acts like Dead Moon, The Oblivians, and The Stooges, G.M.C delivered no-frills, high-energy punk rock that embodied the DIY ethos of the era. The band quickly became a fixture in the Palmy scene, playing regularly at local venues and events. They also made frequent trips to Wellington, performing at notable spots such as Thistle Hall, Valve, and Underground Arts, as well as appearing at Punkfest 2001. One highlight for Graeme Slimin came in 2001 when G.M.C opened for Flesh D-Vice at Harvesters Bar on Halloween – reuniting him with old tour-mates from 1987.

In 2001, the band self-released their only known recording: the D.I.Y. EP, a fittingly titled snapshot of their raw, unpolished sound. G.M.C remained active in the Tokaro hardcore/ punk circles until their split in 2003. Following the breakup, Graeme and Matt went on to form the Turbojugend-affiliated band Black Chrome. Though short-lived, G.M.C captured the gritty, fertile spirit of early-2000s Palmerston North music scene.
