Black Chrome

Black Chrome

Black Chrome was a hard-and-fast “death punk” band formed in 2004 in the swamplands of Palmerston North, by Wolfgang Blitzer, Jimmy Snuff, and Matt Von Chrome. Drawing heavy inspiration from the Norwegian band Turbonegro, they described their sound as “Mercedes styles with a Gucci bent and a powerhouse tank engine.” The group made frequent trips to Wellington playing venues such as Underground Arts, Valve, Bar Bodega and San Fran Bathhouse, mixing it up with the capital’s punk and hardcore scene.

In a previous life Wolfgang had played in Wellington Oi band The Sub-Dominants (1987–88), hitting the road alongside the mighty Flesh D-Vice for the Hellfire and Damnation tour.

In 2006 Black Chrome embarked on a blitzkrieg tour of France, Germany, and the Netherlands that included an appearance at the Denim Blue Festival in Tilburg, a global gathering of the Turbojugend family. Upon returning to New Zealand they released their self-titled debut album in October 2006 and secured support slots for old-school punk acts Peter and the Test Tube Babies and the Anti-Nowhere League.

The following year they expanded the lineup by adding second guitarist Jamaine (aka J. Corpse) and performed at Taranaki legend Slammy’s “Ascension to Valhalla” event in July. In 2008 Jimmy Snuff relocated to Australia and was replaced on bass by Ben Topping. The new lineup opened for UK punk legends The Vibrators and The Business, as well as American acts Strike Anywhere, Bouncing Souls, and Hot Water Music.

In 2011 Black Chrome released the Takaro EP and played the Napier Death Punk Fest on December 3 to celebrate. Matt Von Chrome departed in 2012, and after cycling through several drummers the band settled on Mons (aka Demonica), who was also playing in Palmerston North duo The Methadonnas.

Black Chrome’s run came to an end in late 2017 marked with the release of the “My Band” album on Tarankai label Demon Nation. Spanning a number of recording sessions and lineup changes over the years, My Band keeps the spirit of Takaro Hardcore alive.
