1992

1992: The year punk broke, again! A new wave of local acts began to define a scene increasingly plugged into wider political and musical currents. It wasn’t a huge scene, but it was active, noisy, and deeply connected, with bands, benefit gigs, and shared flats (notably the Screaming Asylum and Hinau Hilton) all feeding into the same ecosystem.

Bands like Schitzofrantics and SMUT were central and the politics of the scene were impossible to ignore. Animal rights activism, already present in earlier years, became more visible in 1992. Benefit gigs – like the World Day for Laboratory Animals show in April – brought together Wellington bands with out-of-town acts.

Musically, things were splintering in interesting ways with heavier and more experimental sounds creeping in. Septic Noise Grinder and Conventional Toasters pushed into grindcore and noise territory, reflecting the era’s taste for more extreme and cross-genre sounds.

International currents filtered in and reshaped local tastes. The global explosion of grunge had a noticeable impact, drawing new kids into punk’s orbit. The anger and social awareness of the moment were amplified by events like the Los Angeles Riots, which resonated strongly with a scene already suspicious of authority.

Touring acts helped cement Wellington’s place on the underground map. Dead Moon’s New Zealand tour was a highlight, bringing a raw, stripped-back ethos that aligned perfectly with local values. Despite its small size, the Wellington scene had a growing momentum. Releases like SMUT’s second EP and Conventional Toasters’ rallied punks around social causes and the revival of Thistle Hall as an all ages venue.
