Mishap was a high-energy pop punk trio from Wellington, New Zealand, formed in early 2016 by high school students Isaac Lundy (guitar, vocals), Datu Beech (bass, vocals), and Sean Beales (drums).
Drawing heavy inspiration from 1990s classics like NOFX, Green Day, and Blink-182, the band captured the raw spirit of teenage life. As they put it: “We write our songs about girls, teenage apathy, getting kicked out of school and our adventures that get us into trouble sometimes!”
The band burst onto the scene quickly, playing their first shows in June 2016 and releasing their debut EP, Toaster, in September 2016. The EP launch happened at Newtown’s Moon Bar on September 16, with support from Bakers Eddy and City Talk. Tracks like “Hey Allie!” and “The Scrumpy Song” became early standouts.
Mishap wasted no time building momentum. In November 2016, they opened for Australian thrash metal band Speedball at Caroline in Wellington during their Back From The Dead tour. In February 2017, they flew the pop punk flag at Waitangi Wastefest at Valhalla, sharing the bill with more hardcore-leaning acts.
Their second EP, Not Feeling This, arrived in April 2017, delivering four more tracks of emo-tinged, teenage pop punk (including songs like “Better Things,” “Come Over,” “Won’t Be Waiting,” and the title track). In June 2017, they dropped the single “Hey Allie!” alongside a professional music video, which helped boost their profile. The single sparked a small tour and saw them supporting major acts including legendary punk icons The Undertones, Blind Man Death Stare, and Marky Ramone.
2018 started strong with a short North Island tour alongside Auckland’s Lookin Up, another appearance at Waitangi Wastefest, and a spot at Punk It Up at Auckland’s Kings Arms – sharing the stage with first-generation NZ punk legends like Proud Scum, No Tag, and Flesh D-Vice (some of whom were 40+ years their senior).
Despite the momentum, Mishap disbanded in September 2018 as members pursued other projects and life opportunities.
