The Good ‘Ole’ Boys

The Good ‘Ole’ Boys

The Good ’Ole’ Boys were a Wellington-based country-punk band active in the early 1990s, blending beer-soaked twang with the confrontational spirit of the local punk underground. The four-piece was a side project for Steve Andrews and Dragan Stojanovic, both also members of notorious punk rabble-rousers Vas Deferens, and it carried the same irreverent, anything-could-happen energy, just filtered through cowboy chords and cow-punk attitude.

The band was sparked by Andrews’ exposure to Australian cow-punk outfit The Johnnys, who played Wellington several times between 1985 and 1988 and left a lasting impression. The Good ’Ole’ Boys went on to play alongside bands like Vas Deferens, Flesh D-Vice, and T.A.B, tearing up venues such as the Clarendon Tavern and Paisley Park, and were known to cause a ruckus busking in Manners Mall. Equal parts homage and piss-take, The Good ’Ole’ Boys occupied a rowdy corner of Wellington’s early ’90s live circuit where punk, country, and chaos happily collided.
