Goatrider

Goatrider

Goatrider was an outsider punk/rock band from Wellington, New Zealand, known for their absurdist approach to music and live performances. Formed in 1990 by Darryl Ward (vocals), Mike Kelly (bass), Laurence Driscoll (drums), and Tim (guitar), the band quickly made a mark with their unconventional style. Their debut show at Bar Bodega in 1991 featured free goat curry for the audience, setting the tone for their quirky stage antics. After the first gig, Mike Kelly left and was replaced by Paul Donovan on bass.

Goatrider played sporadically in Wellington’s underground scene, performing at venues like Kaminsky’s, Empire Warehouse, Bar Bodega, and Cuba Cuba. In 1991, they self-released a four-song demo EP titled FTS on cassette. The band evolved in 1992 with the addition of Michelle, who brought saxophone, trumpet, flute, and vocals to the mix, and Don, who joined on rhythm guitar, further enriching their chaotic sound.

Frontman Darryl Ward’s connection to the local scene included a friendship with Steve Andrews of Vas Deferens, for whom he wrote the song “Microwave Pies” during a marathon session at Scribblers Bar. Goatrider’s wild ride came to an end with their final show in mid-1993, with the smell of burnt hair after Darryl accidentally set his head on fire while riding a rocking-goat.
