Molenaar were a short-lived crust punk band from Wellington, New Zealand, active around 2018–2019. The lineup featured Alex McCarthy on drums, Ciaran on guitar, Tane on bass and vocals, and Connor on vocals. The members came from a lineage of noisy, uncompromising underground bands. Alex had played in Vomit Storm (2013–2016), Tane in Gutrot (2012–2013) and Caskgrinder, while Connor was also active in Bordger.
The band released a single demo EP, Hate Not Phobia, in October 2018 through Wellington label Always Never Fun Records, recorded by Vanya Vitali of Slimebag. The record captured their furious blend of crust punk and D-beat, with a touch of heavy metal grit.
Their name, Molenaar, referenced Jan Molenaar, the man behind the 2009 Napier shootings that saw three police officers shot with one losing his life. The choice of name reflected the band’s outspoken anti-police stance and their interest in dark, confrontational subject matter.
Molenaar played a handful of intense live shows, including a spot at Waitangi Wastefest 2019, before splitting up later that year.
