The Neoteric Tribesmen recorded twice at Sausage (and the hourly rate, to our dismay, had gone up to $12.50). The first session resulted in Castaways, Everything, Machine that Do, and March of the Flagellants. Richard, who had already been in contact with Robert Smith, sent him a copy of this demo and received a letter of appreciation in return. The last (and most Cure-like) track was Robert’s favourite. This was a precursor to meeting The Cure (through a party at David Maclennan’s flat) and the jam session in the basement practice room.
A second session at Sausage produced Dead Companions, The Pawn, Folk Tale of the Sun Man, Days of Grace, and Three Tribesmen. This, together with the previous session, was released on cassette in late 1981 (for the Christmas market!). All copies sold within about a fortnight (I think there was 100). The cassette was packaged in a brown paper bag (purchased in bulk from a dairy) with a potato-cut print of the band’s logo on it. Inside was an A5-size photocopied comic, with each band member contributing a double-sided A4 sheet.
