Made up of Dave Morris (guitar), Kevin Kermack (bass\/vocals) and Gary Steele (drums), the band earned a reputation as something of an enigma, largely due to their habit of retreating into their Upper Hutt flat for long stretches to obsessively refine their sound. After Aftershock\u2019s final gig in October 1983, The Glass formed in July 1984, making their live debut that September at Victoria University\u2019s student union bar. Over the next year they became regulars on the Wellington circuit, sharing bills with bands such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/upthepunks.co.nz\/2025\/06\/skank-attack\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"458\">Skank Attack<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/upthepunks.co.nz\/2025\/07\/flesh-d-vice\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"247\">Flesh D-Vice<\/a>, Crying Out Loud<\/strong> and <strong>Tradaviks<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">Live, The Glass were a powerful three-piece, built on a heavy, driving rhythm section offset by chiming, angular guitar. Reviewers noted Kermack\u2019s confrontational vocal style and the band\u2019s intense stage presence, with songs like \u201cPretty\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m Laughing Now\u201d and the fan-favourite \u201cWhen the Wind Blows\u201d standing out. A June 1985 show at Wellington\u2019s Pulse club was recorded and later released as a rare <strong>split live tape<\/strong> with <strong>Skank Attack<\/strong>, engineered by Brent McLaughlin of <strong>The Gordons<\/strong>, the most substantial document of the band\u2019s sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">In October 1985 The Glass entered Frontier Studio, and their track \u201cWhen the Wind Blows\u201d was later selected as the title track for the 1987 <strong>When the Wind Blows<\/strong> compilation, a key snapshot of Wellington\u2019s independent music scene in the mid-1980s. By late 1985, however, Steele was preparing to move to the UK. Rather than replace him, Morris and Kermack chose to call it a day.
