Running for a week in late August, the event was ostensibly a celebration of student creativity, featuring a mix of theater, art, music, and performance. However, it became synonymous with the explosive introduction of punk music to the conservative capital, serving as a flashpoint for the genre’s broader arrival in New Zealand. Punk, which had erupted in the UK the previous year with bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash, was already simmering in Auckland’s underground scene. By 1977, groups such as the Suburban Reptiles, The Scavengers, Rooter, and The Terrorways had cultivated a dedicated following of rebellious youth. Yet Wellington, often seen as a staid, bureaucratic “grey town,” remained largely untouched by this raw, anti-establishment wave – until the F.Arts brought it crashing ashore.

On August 24, 1977, Wellington’s youth got their inaugural taste of punk when two of Auckland’s premier acts, the Suburban Reptiles and The Scavengers, descended for the festival. These bands were slotted into a lineup dominated by what some reviewers described as “turgid prog-rock and pub-band hacks,” creating a stark contrast that amplified the punks’ disruptive energy. The Suburban Reptiles, known for their chaotic, confrontational style, and The Scavengers, with their raw, sawmill-like sound, embodied the punk ethos: short, aggressive songs, basic rhythms, and a deliberate rejection of musical polish. As journalist Redmer Yska noted in Rip It Up (October 1977), watching The Scavengers perform was a revelation compared to the “tired, obsolete science” of established acts like “Living Sailor” and “Hello Ragnarok” at the Town Hall. Yska praised their “true and refreshing” energy, even if their playing was unrefined and their poses derivative, positioning punk as a necessary purge of rock’s bloated excesses.

The arrival of these bands wasn’t just musical – it was a cultural invasion. Local newspapers, including the Dominion and Evening Post, sensationalised the punks as an “assault on decent Kiwi society,” feeding into a narrative of moral panic. The bands, ever eager for publicity, played up the shock value with gobbing, swearing, and provocative antics. Simon Grigg, a key figure in New Zealand’s emerging punk scene, later recalled the atmosphere: “Wellington was another matter altogether. It was like the aliens had come to town, like the monsters from planet freak had arrived to steal your children. And we felt it too. Walking down the streets, down Cuba Street or Lambton Quay, it was like we’d gone back decades.” (Simon Grigg) This sense of otherworldliness heightened tensions, turning the city into a battleground of stares, antagonism, and outright hostility.

By the night of the main gig at Victoria University, anticipation had boiled over into chaos. The audience, a mix of curious students and conservative onlookers, clashed with the performers’ aggressive style. The Suburban Reptiles bore the brunt of it: drummer Buster Stiggs, responding to heckling, hurled a drumstick into the crowd, injuring a female audience member and sparking the infamous “Blood On The Floor” incident – a near-riot that underscored punk’s volatile appeal. The Scavengers fared no better; guitarist Johnny Volume made front-page news after being assaulted by six men in the university toilets, reflecting a vigilante mob mentality that gripped the town. These events provided ample fodder for the press, painting the punks as dangerous outsiders while inadvertently amplifying their mythos.

Despite – or perhaps because of – the debacle, the F.Arts punk infusion left an indelible mark on the capital’s music scene. The week-long “assault” on Wellington inspired a new generation of bored youth, planting the seeds for a local punk movement. When the Suburban Reptiles and The Scavengers returned the following year for the New Wave Special ’78 at the Town Hall, the event sold out, signaling punk’s rapid integration into the national consciousness. In retrospect, the 1977 festival wasn’t just a student arts gathering; it was the chaotic birth of punk in New Zealand’s political centre, challenging societal norms and invigorating a stagnant music landscape. As Yska aptly put it, punk was on a mission to dismantle the “old bitch gone in the teeth,” heralding a new era of raw, rebellious expression in New Zealand.

<h2
