VBF

VBF

VBF was a short-lived punk band from Wellington, New Zealand, active around 2000, known for their raw, confrontational sound inspired by American first-wave punk bands like Circle Jerks, Black Flag, and Middle Class. The lineup featured Ben Smith on vocals, Sarah Parr on bass, Angela Kennedy on guitar, and Blair Jones on drums. The band’s name playfully stood for Virgin Blood Farts, Very Best Friend, or Velvet Bible Federation, reflecting their irreverent attitude.

Formed out of boredom in Ben Smith’s spacious bedroom, VBF was a product of Wellington’s vibrant punk scene. Ben, a transplant from New Plymouth’s hardcore scene, found inspiration in Wellington’s anarchist hub, The Freedom Shop, where he immersed himself in zines and radical literature. Blair Jones, previously the provocative frontman of Deaf Terrorists, took a quieter role behind the drums but remained a key figure in Wellington’s DIY music world, often likened to a local mashup of G.G Allin and Malcolm McLaren.

VBF debuted at a house party on Donald McLean Street in Newtown, sharing the bill with Auckland’s The Get Fucked Ups, Missing Teeth, and capital city hardcore band Pedal Faster. Their brief run included gigs at Underground Arts and Punkfest 2000’s Saturday afternoon slot. They recorded a four-track cassingle that was never released, with Ben describing it as an “embarrassment to the punk rock race,” embodying the band’s mission to strip punk of its “cool” veneer and embrace its raw, unpolished essence. One track, Scratch To Bleed, appeared on the 2001 compilation Gowned and Bagged.

VBF disbanded shortly after, with Blair and Angela forming Padded Cell, while Ben relocated to Syria where he immersed himself in Arab culture.
