The Dead Scene brought a tight, fast, and melodic strain of 1990s-inspired hardcore punk to the Wellington scene during their active run from 2008 to 2012. The group first formed in mid-2008 under the emo-esque name Street Light Requiem, featuring Tim Posta (bass/vocals) and Pete Harrow (guitar/vocals), with a debut on 9 October 2008 at Valve Bar. Street Light’s first drummer left for Australia shortly after and the project paused until Glen Oakes joined on drums and Caleb Walters was added on second guitar and vocals.
By May 2010, Street Light Requiem were gigging again alongside local groups such The Outsiders, The Offbeats, and Nana Squad. A month later, the band changed their name to The Dead Scene, quickly securing support slots for US acts Strung Out and Strike Anywhere.
Caleb departed after roughly a year, with The Dead Scene continuing on as a trio. 2011 saw the band open for Canadian punk legends D.O.A. in March and release their debut EP, Nowhere To Run, in September. The release show, held at Bar Medusa on 17 September 2011, included Dimestore Skanks, a ska-punk band featuring both Tim and Pete that would go on to become a long-running local favourite.
Throughout 2012, The Dead Scene frequently shared bills with Dimestore Skanks before playing their final gig on October 6 at the Capital Chaos 12-hour punk fest held at Bar Medusa. Shortly afterward, Pete, Tim, and Glen joined forces with Dave McDonald (formerly of the Outsiders) to form the post-hardcore band Starving Millions.
