Punchbowl

Punchbowl

Punchbowl spiked the punk scene from 2007-2008 with blistering riffs and baddass beats bringing total Tropicanarchy to Wellington.

Punchbowl exploded onto the Wellington punk scene in March 2007 with a lineup featuring Kim Gruschow on vocals, Charlie Camp on drums, Steph Stutely on bass, and Georgina on guitar. Known for their raucous, high-energy performances, they played their debut gig on May 5, 2007, at Old Studio 9 alongside Smashin’ Off, Goodtimes, Tentacles of Destruction, and Shortlived.

The band quickly became a staple in Wellington’s vibrant punk and hardcore community, performing regularly throughout 2007. Highlights included appearances at the two-day Sharkfest festival in July and Punkfest in October. Punchbowl carried their momentum into 2008, kicking off the year with a January show supporting Oakland, California’sBorn/Dead. They maintained a relentless schedule, playing nearly every week around Wellington, including a notable Tuesday night, April residency at San Fran Bathhouse.

In July 2008, Punchbowl recorded their debut album Tropicanarchy at Blacknote, an improvised studio at the corner of Cuba and Vivian, with Otis Chamberlain at the helm. True to their “all gas, no brakes” ethos, they self-released the CD with a launch gig at Happy a few weeks later. However, Punchbowl’s wave of momentum hit a sandbar with guitarist Georgina departing overseas, prompting a temporary hiatus.

Undeterred, Kim, Charlie, and Steph regrouped in 2009 as a three-piece, with Steph switching to guitar, playing handful of gigs in this configuration. Meanwhile, Kim and Steph wasted no time forming a new project, Cult Of The Cobra, which debuted at Sharkfest 2008 in August, picking up where Punchbowl left off. You Can stick that in your silver ring thing!
