Basura Blanca (Spanish for “white trash”) was a post-hardcore band based out of Nelson from 2007-12. The lineup featured Aidan McDonald (guitar/vocals), Matt Mason (bass/vocals), Nigel Duncan (drums), and Hayden Gifkins (guitar). Aidan had previously played in Nelson punk band Killtrain before relocating to Wellington in the early 2000’s and playing in a number of notable bands including School of Meat and Backyard Burial.

A staple in Nelson’s small underground scene, Basura Blanca played local venues The Phat Club, Baby G’s, and Shark Bar, while also making frequent journeys across the Cook Strait to play shows in Wellington such as Punkfest (2007, 2010, 2011), Sharkfest, and Future Days.

A demo CD was released in 2010 at a Phat Club show with local band Without A Fight. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake Basura Blanca played a fundraiser show at Nelson’s Theatre Royal alongside a lineup of other local talent.

That July, they recorded their self-titled debut album with engineer Nathan Neumann, later released it at Nevermind Punkfest in Wellington on October 22, 2011. Basura Blanca played their final show at Shark Bar on January 7, 2012.
