The Wellington punk and post-punk scene in 1980 marked a pivotal breakout year, as the city’s first significant wave of original punk-influenced bands emerged and coalesced into a vibrant, DIY underground movement. Often referred to retrospectively as the “Terrace scene” (an arty, vaguely nihilistic post-punk pocket of inner city Wellington), it blended raw punk energy with experimental and new wave elements.
Key venues drove the action. Early in the year, places like the Last Resort hosted shows, but May 1980 saw the Rock Theatre on Vivian Street rebranded as Billy the Club (sometimes styled Billy d’Club). This shift made it far more welcoming to the new punk and new wave acts than the more conservative, brewery-owned pubs. Billy the Club became the central hub for the scene, fostering a gritty, exciting atmosphere in what was then part of the red-light district area.
A landmark event was the Queen’s Birthday weekend rockfest at Billy the Club, a three-night showcase that brought together emerging local bands like Wallsockets, Life In The Fridge Exists, Shoes This High, and Domestic Blitz. This gathering helped solidify the scene’s identity and momentum.
Numerous bands formed or became active that year:
- Ambitious Vegetables recorded four songs at Broadcasting House in March, though frontman Andrew Fagan departed mid-year to form the new wave pop group The Mockers (releasing their debut single “Good Old Days” in August).
- Condemned Sector, started by college students (including members from Onslow College), practiced in the Clyde Quay School basement (shared with Ambitious Vegetables) and played select gigs.
- The Steroids released their debut single “Mr Average / Out Of Control” in November.
- Other notable acts included Beat Rhythm Fashion, Naked Spots Dance, Wallsockets, Life In The Fridge Exists, Protons, and Domestic Blitz.
These bands played fairly regular shows, building a tight-knit community. The scene’s DIY spirit peaked with the Four Stars (****) compilation LP, released in November 1980 on Sausage Records (limited to around 250 copies). Planned by the Wallsockets and engineered/ mixed at Sausage Studios, it featured tracks from Wallsockets, Beat Rhythm Fashion, Life In The Fridge Exists, and Naked Spots Dance, serving as the first major document of Wellington’s post-punk/ new wave explosion.
Live music extended beyond locals, with bands from Auckland and Christchurch touring through, plus international acts like Gary Numan, Boomtown Rats, The Members, The Cure, and notably the Ramones performing at the Winter Show Buildings in Newtown in July. Influential Christchurch band The Gordons spent an extended stay in the capital after their van broke down, adding cross-pollination.
Tensions surfaced late in the year during the Labour Weekend “Battle of the Sounds” contest in October, a three-night event where punk and new wave bands accused judge Phil O’Brien of bias toward more established acts, sparking a minor scandal and highlighting the scene’s outsider status.
Overall, 1980 transformed Wellington from a quieter outpost into a hotbed of raw, independent music. The year’s burst of activity – regular gigs, venue support, a key compilation, and growing confidence – laid a groundwork for the city’s post-punk scene, much of which would be undone in an implosion of violence and negativity across New Zealand society in the coming year.
